Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah - is an American performer, actress, and singer. Her career as a musician, film and TV artist has earned the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded an Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. an officer in the police force. Her parents divorced at the age of Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic high school located in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is her name for stage before she was eight years old. It means fragile in Arabic. Latifah is 5-foot-10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always tall. She performed the number Home from the musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah started beatboxing for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah became part of with the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of an MC team led by producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created a demo of the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was a member of Latifah in the early days and was awed by the single. In 1988, she dropped Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
